Alleviating the
sufferings of girls with mental
aberration
Bharatiya
culture emphasises the need for care of the underprivileged and deprived,
especially womenfolk who are images of Goddess parashakti. There is no meaning
to seek God elsewhere, when Be himself appears before us discarded in the
society. Children with mental aberration by birth are a curse for the family.
Modern medical system differentiates the same by names, but our conventional
systems reason out the causes and adopt multi-dimensional approach to solve the
problem. It includes support, care, medication, group activities and prayer.
The
break of conventional joint family system and emergence of nuclear family has
added fuel to the fire and the support systems and remedial approaches by
families and village groups have vanished. Families cannot manage the victim on
their own, especially when the families belong to poor financial set up.
Considering
all these aspects, swayamsevaks and philanthropists in and around Thrissur town
in Kerala decided to set up a project in the year 2000 to alleviate the sufferings
of such people. Even though work on the project was started in 2000, the
registration of the Trust was formulated in 2004 in the name of Sree Parvathy
Sevanilayam.
Presently
the project is accommodated in a pucca building of 2000 sq. ft. Thirteen girls
are inmates in the Kendram. The set up consists of one Sevavrati, 4 full timers
and an office incharge. The girls' mental health is monitored periodically by
psychiatrists to register improvement and remedial action. Majority of inmates
go to special school meant for such people daily. Psychiatrists visit the
centre periodically to assess the mental state of girls. The inmates through
the care provided to them are showing considerable improvement in their health.
The project is managed by a committee drawn from the members who are 40 in
strength. Dignitaries from various walks of society visit the centre, which is
really a motivating factor. It is proposed to accommodate more people by
expanding the infrastructure.
