Aashvasth Sushrusha Kendra, a home for bed ridden

Aashvasth Sushrusha Kendra, a home for bed ridden
Looking after the bed ridden people who are hit by chronic diseases is a Herculean task that requires a great amount of patience. While interacting with such people, utmost care needs to be taken so that they must not get hurt because of some hard words spelled by the nursing person. However, Aashvasth Sushrusha Kendra at Maharashtra’s Nagpur city is confidently doing this job and has won the trust of such patients through its selfless service. Patients that are admitted here have developed affection with the institute that now they don’t want to go elsewhere.

20 years ago, the idea for setting up such a centre struck the mind of a middle-class woman because of an accident and the family requirement motivated her to lay the foundation for the same. Situated at Nelco Society in Subhash Nagar locality, the centre has a complete arrangement for taking care of bed ridden patients and that too in a homely atmosphere. Sunanda Patrikar who looks after all these patients is basically an expert in the field of astrology. Her brother was hit by polio at the tender age of six. She took strenuous efforts to look after him and thus the concept was evolved in her mind for setting up such seva centre.

In 1991, Aashwasth Sushrusha Kendra was started at the house of Dr Mardikar situated in Swavalambi Nagar locality. Later on, it was shifted to localities such as Telecom Nagar and HB Estate. Finally, the land was purchased at Nelco Society and thus a well equipped centre was built. Taking into account the increasing number of patients, one more centre was set up at village Jam by purchasing the farm land.

Nelco Society Branch currently houses 15 patients whereas the Jam Branch is having ten patients. Patients suffering from various ailments such as burn injuries, arthritis, paralysis, Parkinson, coma, etc are treated at these centres. Patients with psychological and mental disorders are also being looked after by the centre.

The speciality of this centre is that Sunandatai never accepted government grants or donations. The entire expenses are met through the co-operation given by the relatives of the patients. Whatever food is cooked for her own family in the kitchen is served to the patients also.

All the relatives do not co-operate equally. Some patients don’t even have the relatives. Such patients also have been accommodated here. Patients from Panchavati Vriddhashram, Nagpur, Pune, Mumbai and Madhya Pradesh are availing the benefit of this centre.

Patients who are bed ridden and cannot get family affection stay here till their last breath. Sunandatai’s daughter Rajlaxmi Dhumal, son-in-law Vasant Dhumal, grandchildren Vaibhav and Dilip along with the karyakartas like Sangeeta Mehta and Ashok Joshi are always at the service of these patients and treat them with a great sense of belongingness. Chandrakant Bobde and his wife look after the Jam Branch.

In her own way, without much help from anybody, Sunandatai is effectively treating the social problems that have arisen due to modern life-style. Doctors regularly come and examine the patients. Treatment is done as per their instructions. Sunandatai resides at the centre itself.

Many patients came to the centre after exploring a lot of other avenues. Now they don’t want to go elsewhere. Many of the patients have left for heavenly abode blessing this place. Blessings of such patients have strengthened the foundation of the centre and the journey of excellence is still going on.
