Aug 13 – Organ Donation Day


More than 5 lakhs Indians are estimated to be in dire need of an organ transplant - kidney, lever, heart, pancreas etc. But the transplants are in thousands only in a year, which takes place in super specialty hospitals – Govt or private.
Since the awareness is less in India, our organ donation is 1/100th  that of USA. Some facts are should know.
Organ donation after brain death

Tissue donation after Cardiac death
1.       Donation only after person has been declared brain dead.
2.       Heart , lever, kidneys, pancreas, small intestines, lungs.
After Cardiac Death
1.       When one dies after diagnosis of cardiac death, they can donate tissues for transplantation.
2.       Tissues – corneas, heart valves, bone, skin veins.
1.       One donor can save the lives of 7.
         i.            One set of corneas are given to 2 people needing sight.
       ii.            Skin grafts are donated for burn victims.
      iii.            Bone, tendons are used in reconstructive surgery.

Let us donate organs, tissues to save lives of our needy bretheren.
