Your girl getting her First period can be a very overwhelming experience for a mom. Generally, now as days schools do take sessions in class 5/6 for girl students on menstruation, though I strongly feel that such sessions are equally important for the boys.

As mom we talk to our girls about periods generally around the age of 8-9 years. Various factors like pollution, food quality and generally stress level have strong connection with first menstruation in girls. Though moms talk to the little one about this natural process, almost all the moms always feel/want that their daughter must get her First Periods

in her (mom) presence.

But we have no control on this so it’s better to prepare ourselves and our girls, just beyond talking to them. So let’s go step by step

❓ Age of First Menstruation/Puberty

✅ 8-13 or 14 years

❓Indicators about First Menstruation

✅ Development of breasts. Generally your girls will get her periods in 2 years, once her breasts start to develop.

✅ She will show pubic hair and underarms hair growth before 6-9 months.

✅ She will have white discharge before 4-6 months. This can be thin or thickly and sticky.

✅ Tender breast and mood swings a few weeks before.

Now once you start observing this signs, what we have to do it

#Talk to your girl about it.

#Inform your #spouse about it.

❓How to handle the First Menstruation away from mom.

If you are around when your girl gets her first cycle, there is nothing like that. But given to our professional commitments and our daughters schools etc there are chances of we not being around. So what can be done, let’s see

1. Make a Kit - I call it “My #FM (First Menstruation) Kit”. In a small pouch I have kept following things:-

One new and one old cut shape underwear.
One sanitary napkin.
One letter for the elder around.
Gift pack of chocolates.
Letter to my daughter.

2. Now keep this pouch in your daughters #school #bag and one at #home. Tell your daughter where it is kept and whom to handover the letter. The school bag pouch letter is for the lady teacher who teaches her by name. The content is

“Dear Maam, My daughter has got her first menses and I have told her to reach you when it happens on School. As you are reading this letter, please call me immediately on 000000000 Number, as I want to be with my daughter. In the mean while please help her to the changing room/wash room. She knows what is to be done but may need your assistance.

3. Similar letter to be kept in the home pouch. It can be addressed to the elder in the house who will be available then.

4. You can decide the Content of letter to your daughter. But do write and keep one in a sealed envelope. She will feel so relaxed reading it.

5. Tell her to call you immediately either from school or classes or from home.

6. Its a very good idea to keep a pair of slacks and T-Shirt in her school bag for Change, around the time.

7. She will feel happy to have the chocolates. Don’t we feel happy  with it during periods.

It’s an good idea to be prepared rather than being worried.

Your girl will need you with her. She will feel anxious, will have mood swings and will feel low around this time. Be sure to handle it with love 
